2004 Board Chair, Alan Spence

Alan Spence has a long history with United Way. A volunteer for more than 20 years, Alan is serving his first term as the Chair of the Board of Directors. But it is not his first position of leadership in the community.

In addition to his duties as the Vice President of Pierce College, Alan has served on the boards of City Club of Tacoma (2002-present), the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce (1992-1996), Washington Womens' Employment and Education (1992-1999), Puget Sound Area Success by Six (1992-1994), Pierce County Community Aids Partnership (1993-1995), Tacoma-Pierce County Ambassadors (1988-1989), Lakewood Area Summit Committee (1991-1992) and the Steilacoom Historical School District Strategic Planning Committee (1991).

Alan has served in an administrative capacity for Pierce College for more than 20 years as well. Prior to joining Pierce, he was Vice President for Business and Finance at Saint Martin's College in Lacey, Washington. He also spent eight years at Evergreen State College in Olympia, working in their accounting department.

Alan received his bachelors degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Redlands. He also earned a masters degree in Business Administration from Pacific Lutheran University and is currently completing his ABD Ed.D in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Washington.

Alan has been a member of the United Way Board of Directors since 1993.
