Board Chair, Alan Spence
Alan Spence has a long history with United Way.
A volunteer for more than 20 years, Alan is serving his first
term as the Chair of the Board of Directors. But it is not
his first position of leadership in the community.
In addition to his duties as the Vice President
of Pierce College, Alan has served on the boards of City Club
of Tacoma (2002-present), the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce
(1992-1996), Washington Womens' Employment and Education (1992-1999),
Puget Sound Area Success by Six (1992-1994), Pierce County
Community Aids Partnership (1993-1995), Tacoma-Pierce County
Ambassadors (1988-1989), Lakewood Area Summit Committee (1991-1992)
and the Steilacoom Historical School District Strategic Planning
Committee (1991).
Alan has served in an administrative capacity
for Pierce College for more than 20 years as well. Prior to
joining Pierce, he was Vice President for Business and Finance
at Saint Martin's College in Lacey, Washington. He also spent
eight years at Evergreen State College in Olympia, working
in their accounting department.
Alan received his bachelors degree in Economics
and Finance from the University of Redlands. He also earned
a masters degree in Business Administration from Pacific Lutheran
University and is currently completing his ABD Ed.D in Educational
Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Washington.
Alan has been a member of the United Way Board
of Directors since 1993.
