WHAT'S NEW...IN HOUSING
United Way Invests in Housing Trust Fund Demonstration Project In 2006, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave $1 million dollars to the United Way to be used towards resolving the affordable housing crisis in Pierce County. This exciting opportunity opened the door to developing a housing fund in this community that would position Pierce County for eligibility for additional foundation and grant funding
Jennie Reed Project to Identify, Address Housing Needs The proposed Jennie Reed housing availability demonstration project is expected to mobilize the more than 1,200 residents in the area between I-5 to the north and west to South 38th and South M Street in Tacoma.
Tacoma Public Utilities Funds Grant for Housing Policy Research
Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU) Energy Services granted United Way of Pierce County $3,000 to fund stipends for three University of Washington - Tacoma student interns to do housing policy research. This is a partnership between UWPC, TPU and the Affordable Housing Consortium to explore the affordable housing plans in several key jurisdictions in Pierce County. The goal is to understand if current housing plans and policies are working (for example, are they able to provide for enough units for all the need now and the growth expected over the next 20 years); and in particular which policies should be replicated.
