Jennie Reed Project to Identify, Address Housing Needs
The proposed Jennie Reed housing availability demonstration project is expected to mobilize the more than 1,200 residents in the area between I-5 to the north and west to South 38th and South M Street in Tacoma.
The ultimate goal is to increase housing for people who are homeless or unable to afford permanent shelter at market rates. This project seeks to identify the housing needs of the Jennie Reed neighborhood and to garner support for its residents for increasing the number of units of affordable housing being built, remodeled, rehabilitated and maintained.
This is a demonstration project for a model that may be replicated in other distressed neighborhoods in Tacoma and Pierce County.
Why the Jennie Reed area? This area was selected by the City of Tacoma as one of four sites for Tacoma’s Community Based Services program based on the high number of calls for emergency services. It is within the City’s Weed and Seed boundaries. The area was selected by Safe Streets because of the lack of community organization and the opportunity to leverage the resources committed to the area by the City.
This project seeks to demonstrate the best practices of mobilizing residents to generate their own ideas for maintaining and increasing the stock of affordable housing, leveraging resources to improve a community and measuring those improvements.
