WHAT'S NEW...IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Study to Examine Barriers to After School Activities United Way of Pierce County is working with the community to increase the number of youth participating in quality afterschool programming and to increase the number of quality youth programs available. United Way and its partners have the challenge of not only increasing these programs but also of overcoming the obstacle preventing kids from participating. Standing in the way of these programs are costs to participate, transportation to get students to programs sites, awareness and cultural and language barriers. Full story »

United Way Joins Statewide Partnership United Way recently rolled out a partnership with Washington After-school Network (WAN) and School’s Out Washington (SOWA) to promote high quality after-school experiences for children and youth. As a Steering Committee member, UWPC has pledged $45,000 in resources to this project over the next three years.

Through this partnership, the group will work to secure resources needed to sustain new and existing after-school programs and ensure that programs are of high quality. The partnership will also address the barriers that limit participation in after-school activities. These barriers include cost, transportation and awareness.

After-school programs play a vital role in our communities, offering safe places for kids to go when they’re not in school. Please visit School’s Out Washington’s web site at www.schoolsoutwashington.org for more information.
