Be an ACT NOw host agency
Help us help you! United Way of Pierce County’s ACT NOW projects support local nonprofits by connecting them with community volunteers. Research and experience show there is a large, untapped pool of ready and willing volunteers that want to work with organizations on a project to project basis. They are excited about making a difference in their community and want to get involved whenever they can. We’re eager to help you make these connections!
Ideal projects are tasks at nonprofit or government agencies that volunteers can complete as a team in a specified amount of time, which has a clear impact on the organization’s mission and is meaningful for the volunteers. Projects should be able to be completed in one session, however, agencies can host distinct projects on a recurrent basis (e.g. every second Tuesday of the month). Most projects should last three to five hours. In order to accommodate volunteers, most projects will take place on evenings or weekends.
Examples of previously successful projects include food service, sorting or boxing donations at a food bank, hosting an activity at a day center, environmental work, etc.
What is the Host Agency responsible for?
- Notifying ACT NOW of any changes to project details at least one week prior to the scheduled date
- Prior to the team starting the project, have a representative provide volunteers an overview of all that the organization does, how volunteers will be helping the agency, and explaining the day’s project
- Having enough tasks laid out and ready to go so that the entire team can get to work shortly after arriving and remain engages for the duration of the project
- Providing clear direction and support throughout the project
- Providing all tools and supplies necessary
- Having backup plans for unforeseen circumstances, such as weather (all projects continue despite weather)
- Thanking the volunteers!
