HARD
WORK AND THE RIGHT HELP PAY OFF FOR SARA
At the age of 17, Sara was a single mother,
trapped in a situation she would have to work hard to overcome.
She was determined to provide for her young child but had
few skills and little experience. When her son became seriously
ill, Sara was forced to quit her stable job and apply for
welfare. When her baby's health stabilized, she attempted
to re-enter the workforce but lacked the skills to compete
in the changing job market.
A second pregnancy forced her back onto welfare
but her time was running out. Sara's caseworker referred her
to the Washington Women's Employment and Education (WWEE)
program. The staff enrolled Sara in programs that she credits
with changing her life. She learned computing skills, presentation
and interviewing skills. They taught her how to manage her
time and her debt. Within four months of applying, WWEE helped
her obtain housing.
Sara gained the self-esteem, confidence and
skills she needed to embark on a career, not just a job. She
graduated with honors and joined the WWEE Speakers' Bureau
where she encourages others through her success.
Through WWEE and the support of United Way
of Pierce County, Sara's life is back on track with a bright
future.
