United Way of Pierce County
Announces $8.5 Million Goal for 2002
September 27, 2002
Kicking off its 2002 community campaign today,
United Way of Pierce County held a celebration at the Mel
Korum YMCA in Puyallup where they announced a goal of raising
$8,500,000 to fund more than 120 critical programs throughout
Pierce County.
"This will definitely be the most challenging
campaign United Way of Pierce County has faced in its 81 year
history," Rick Allen, President, United Way of Pierce
County said. "We are starting the campaign with nearly
$500,000 in lost pledges from last year, due to a drastically
declining stock market, struggling local economy, and high
unemployment rate."
"The sources of funding for human services
are drying up with major budget shortfalls at the federal,
state, and local levels. It is now crunch time for human services
in Pierce County. We really need our supporting organizations
to run strong and visible campaigns this year. And if an organization
does not run a United Way campaign, this is the year to start,"
said Allen.
"Many people who have helped others for
years are now in need of assistance themselves," said
Pamela Transue, 2002 United Way of Pierce County Campaign
Chair and President of Tacoma Community College. "Our
local job training centers, counseling centers, health care
providers, food banks, and shelters are seeing people they
have never seen before. The help of all of the employees in
Pierce County is needed to protect the entire safety net of
services in our community."
