High School Seniors Earn
Scholarship for Community Service Work

The United Way of Pierce County today awarded
ten high school seniors with $500 scholarships for their more
than 50 hours of volunteer service over the past year. The
Willie Stewart Community Service Scholarships recognizes high
school seniors who have demonstrated exemplary leadership
skills through their involvement with Pierce County community
and human service agencies and programs.
Scholarships are funded through the annual Willie
Stewart Community Service Golf Classic. Individuals and businesses
from throughout the county join Willie Stewart to sponsor
the tournament and the net the proceeds go to the scholarship
fund. Additional scholarship proceeds are provided through
Youth United, a United Way of Pierce County program designed
to increase youth volunteerism and involvement in the community.
Spots are still available for those individuals
and parties interested in participating in this year's golf
tournament, which will be held on Friday August 16 at Whispering
Firs Golf Course on the McChord Air Force Base. The cost for
participating in the tournament is $150 for a single golfer
and $600 for a foursome. Entry fees include: a golf cart;
an official tournament shirt; a box lunch; prizes; and dinner.

About Willie Stewart
As a lifelong community volunteer, Willie Stewart has served
the Tacoma Pierce County area for over 30 years as an educator,
volunteer and Army reservist. Demonstrating his commitment
to young people, Willie has worked with Tacoma Public Schools
and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pierce County. In addition,
his volunteer influence extends to a host of other organizations
including United Way of Pierce County and the American Cancer
Society.
The following Pierce County high school seniors
received scholarships:
Foss High School
Helen Lai
Over the past two years Lai has volunteered nearly 140 hours
helping visitors and patients with wheelchairs at St Joseph
Hospital. She has also tutored elementary school students
in math and reading through the Kid Reach program. Lai also
volunteers many hours to programs sponsored through her church.
Lai will attend Seattle Pacific University.
Kevin Blair
Blair has been very active through the United Way of Pierce
County's Youth Leadership Council and served this past year
as a youth representative to the United Way Board of Directors.
Blair has also been very active in both his high school and
church. In addition, Blair is a diversion program volunteer
working with juvenile offenders. Blair will attend Claremont
McKenna College.
Curtis High School
Sandra Woodhouse
Woodhouse volunteers as a camp leader for young girls in her
church and has spent numerous hours volunteering in a nursing
home for the elderly. In addition, Woodhouse has been a trainer
for the football team and manager for the lacrosse team at
Curtis High School. Woodhouse will attend Brigham Young University
(Idaho).
Puyallup High School
Joseph W. Bryant
Bryant is a founding member of Puyallup Assisting Student
Success, which organized a voter registration drive at Puyallup
High School. He has also volunteered many hours at Spinning
Elementary School helping out in the special education classroom.
Additionally, Bryant was the Key Club and senior class president.
Bryant will attend Central Washington University.
Fife High School
Katie Baker
Baker has assembled an impressive list of community service
activities that include: the annual Pierce County Hunger Walk,
Milton Youth City Council, Paint Tacoma Beautiful, and Discovery
Elementary School Tutor Program. Baker will attend Central
Washington University.
Clover Park High School
Nicole Lux
Lux has volunteered many hours with several environmental
based organizations. In addition, Lux has given generously
of her time to Habitat for Humanity and has also prepared
and presented anti-drug use materials to elementary school
students. Lux will attend the University of Washington.
Eatonville Independent Study Center
Laurie Rush
Rush spent many hour helping mentally handicapped teens learn
basic life skills at the Adult Daily Living House (ADL). In
addition to her work with ADL, Rush has volunteered numerous
hours with Parents and Students in Action in Eatonville. Rush
will attend Ashmead College.
Emerald Ridge High School
Stephanie M. Patterson
Patterson committed several volunteer hours to the Child Therapy
Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital where she assisted hospital
personnel. Patterson has also volunteered significant hours
to the Sumner-Puyallup Animal Shelter and Explorer Post #
534. Patterson will attend Washington State University.
Bellarmine Preparatory School
Andrew Klein
Klein has tutored students at Stanley and Reed Elementary
schools as well as Hunt Middle School. His civic involvement
is further demonstrated by the fact that over the past two
years he has completed over 320 hours of volunteer service
in a variety of community placements, which include Mary Bridge
Children's Foundation, the Dimmer Foundation, and the Pilipino
American Youth Organization. Klein will attend Gonzaga University.
Megan Fouty
Fouty has volunteered at Allenmore Hospital, Phoenix Housing,
and Nativity House. In addition, Fouty has spent many hours
as a tutor at Hunt Middle School working with high risk-risk
adolescents. Fouty will attend Gonzaga University.
Jerry Beckendorf Scholarship
In addition to the 10 Willie Stewart Community Service Scholars,
United Way of Pierce County is also recognizing one additional
student for their commitment to community service with a $250
Jerry Beckendorf Scholarship. Beckendorf retired from United
Way of Pierce County last month after working 15 years as
the organization's Labor Liaison. The scholarship is in honor
of Beckendorf's commitment and efforts to build a better community.
This year's Jerry Beckendorf Scholarship was given to:
Randi Phelps, White River High School
Phelps is an active member of the Connection Program, which
brings students together with people who have unique needs.
Phelps worked specifically with children who have developmental
and physical disabilities. In addition, Phelps's is as a tutor
at a local elementary school. Phelps will attend Green River
Community College.
