Youth Spend Their Saturday Volunteering for Third Annual Youth Day of Caring

January 19, 2002

Out of bed before noon on a Saturday? More than 250 middle and high school students will join United Way of Pierce County at the heart of the solution to kick off the third annual Youth Day of Caring event on Saturday, January 19, 2002. The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Al Davies Boys & Girls Club, 1620 S. 17th St., Tacoma.

After breakfast and a rally, more than 50 community members will team the youth volunteers from over 20 schools, churches and other local community organizations to complete various projects from cleaning and painting to interacting with seniors and children.

Emceeing the event will be Jeremy Rubin, 2000 Boys & Girls Club Western Region Youth of the Year and University of Washington student. Speakers for the event will include United Way of Pierce County President Rick Allen and Sue Westering, Executive Director, Tacoma Center YMCA.

Volunteering for Youth Day of Caring will demonstrate the impact youth can make in their communities and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will also provide an opportunity for teens to learn more about community problems and how volunteering can make a positive impact on the problems.
