United Way Announces New Board Members

April 22, 2003

More than 200 local executives and community leaders attended the United Way of Pierce County Annual Meeting on Tuesday, April 22 at The Tacoma Club, where they learned about the 2002 community accomplishments and gained insight on the condition of human services in Pierce County. In addition, the new Board of Directors and Board Chair were announced at the 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting.

The 2003 Board of Directors executive slate include: Mike Turek, The Boeing Company, Chair; Alan Spence, Pierce College, Chair-Elect; Scott Winship, Northwest Commercial Bank, Treasurer; and Linda Gutmann, Frank Russell Company, Secretary.

New board members include: Sergio Armijo, Pierce County Superior Court Judge; Doug Baker, Community Services Manager United Parcel Services; Mike Burlingame,The News Tribune; Paul Knebel, Machinist Union District Lodge 751; Alfonso Montoya, Centro Latino; Debra Young, City of Lakewood

Retiring board members include: Denny Hunthausen, Catholic Community Services; Greg Mowat, Sound Transit; Nancy Pease-Hogan, Labor Volunteer; Dale Sowell, Weyerhaeuser Company; John Thompson, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286; and Kathi Willis, Group Health Cooperative.

Immediately following the meeting, many of the local CEO’s and top-level business leaders in attendance rolled up their sleeves and participated in the Executive Day of Caring. Executives spent the remainder of the day performing a number of projects for 9 local funded agencies and nonprofit organizations. Some of the projects for the day included: planting vegetables and pruning hanging baskets for L'Arche Farm & Gardens, building a child's workbench at Puyallup Playcare and painting classrooms at Phoenix Housing Network.
