United Way Announces New Board at Annual Meeting

TACOMA, Wash.-United Way of Pierce County held its Annual Meeting Thursday, April 29th at the Tacoma Club. Local executives and community leaders learned about the 2003 community accomplishments and gained insight on the condition of human services in Pierce County. They also learned how United Way will work in partnership with volunteers, human service providers, business and community leaders, unions and local governments to resolve the toughest issues in Pierce County.

In addition, the new Board of Directors and Board Chair were announced at the 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting.


The 2004 board of directors officers include: Alan Spence, Pierce College, Chair; Linda Gutmann, Russell Investment Group, Chair-Elect; Scott Winship, Community Volunteer, Treasurer; and Jim Krueger, Vandeberg, Johnson & Gandara, Secretary.

New board members include: Amy Goings, Clover Park Technical College; Marcia Harris, Peninsula School District; Grover Johnson, Laborers International Union of North America; and Thaddeus Martin IV, Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell.

Retiring board members include: Sandy Hill, Community Volunteer; Bruce Sadler,
Kennedy High School; and James Walton, City of Tacoma

Immediately following the meeting, local CEOs and top-level business leaders in attendance rolled up their sleeves and participated in the Executive Day of Caring. Executives spent the remainder of the day performing a number of projects for ten local partner agencies and nonprofit organizations. Some of the projects included planting flowers and hanging baskets with developmentally disabled individuals, serving lunch to needy patrons at a soup kitchen, and conducting mock job interviews with students learning English as a second language.
