United Way Announces Record
Community Campaign Total of More Than $10 Million in Charitable
Giving
January 30, 2002
Nearly 500 volunteers and
donors celebrated a record breaking $10,077,542 in charitable
giving in 2001 at the United Way of Pierce County Warm Your
Heart Victory Celebration held January 30, 2002 at the Landmark
Convention Center in Tacoma. The total includes $9,067,431
raised through the United Way community campaign.
After a difficult year with the events of September
11th, a national economy in recession, and a growing demand
for human services, the people of Pierce County rose to the
occasion with a record setting United Way community campaign,
which raises gifts of time, money and products for local nonprofit
agencies.
The outlook for our campaign was looking
pretty bleak for us this past fall, said Rick Allen,
United Way president. We had many different set-backs
to overcome, however, every time we were met with a new challenge
our community stepped forward with open arms to embrace and
help those in need. The credit of this record-breaking year
goes to the unwavering character of our community, whose generosity
is greatly appreciated.
Apart from funds raised through the annual community
campaign, United Way leaders are excited to announce additional
gifts totaling $1,010,111 from other community efforts. They
include $125,864 in volunteer time to complete community projects,
$39,263 through Season of Caring for family adoptions, a new
endowment of $15,000 from the Willie Stewart Community Service
Golf Classic for youth scholarships, $552,000 from Gifts In
Kind (donated products) and $277,984 in cash grants for special
program services.
The dollars raised will immediately be put to
use in the Pierce County area, though local agency programs
funded by United Way volunteers. Local citizen volunteers
serving on 11 panels, decide where to best invest donor dollars
for the most impact on critical issues in our community. Examples
are programs at the Tacoma Urban League, the YWCA, Centro
Latino, Lakewood Area Shelter Association, Helping Hand House
in Puyallup and Key Peninsula Community Services.
