Season of Caring Meets Holiday Needs of More than 1500

January 27, 2004

The holiday season brings great joy but it also brings great need. United Way of Pierce County's Season of Caring provided companies, individuals and organizations an opportunity to help meet those needs.

Nearly $56,000 in goods were donated this year and 1,582 individuals were sponsored. Additionally six toy/gift drives, five food drives and three giving trees provided items as well. Participants included 65 companies, 26 families/individuals, seven student/youth groups and two church groups.

People can participate in a variety of ways. The Adopt-a-Family program matches a family, disabled individual or low-income senior with sponsors to provide a holiday meal and gifts. Sponsors can also provide for a family in the form of a "giving tree" where a group of participants pick individual items to provide as their gift.

Running a gift or food drive can supply items for families as well. Donations of a new toy or gift item, especially those for adults and teens, are needed. Food donations go toward making meal baskets for those in need.
