  • United Way 211 Debuts in Pierce County

Finding help when you need it can be a complicated process. But three numbers are about to change that. 211 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities.

By dialing 211, callers can access the right resources for their needs. The service is confidential and will help reserve the 911 system for life and death emergencies.

    New Campaigns Boost Challenge Match

United Way of Pierce County is looking for new businesses and we need your help. Do you have a workplace campaign where you work? How about vendors and suppliers who serve your company? Get them involved by running a campaign.

The 2006 Community Challenge Match makes every new business especially valuable to United Way of Pierce County. All new pledges and contributions to the Community Solutions Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar if made by April 15, 2007.

Nearly 20 businesses in Pierce County ranging in size from two to nearly 2,000 employees have agreed to run United Way campaigns for the first time this year.

The United Way staff can create a program to fit any size of business. For information on how to participate in this exciting campaign year, contact Scott Claeys at 253-572-8487 or scottc@uwpc.org. We welcome your referrals.

    Community Service Scholars Announced

Twenty-eight students received community service scholarships through the Willie Stewart and the Jerry Beckendorf Community Service Scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who have given back to their community through volunteer service.

Supporting the Community in a New Way

In the year of the Community Challenge Match, companies are being encouraged to think "outside the box". One company doing just that is Heritage Bank.

Heritage Bank has been a long-time supporter of United Way of Pierce County. This summer, they created a program that makes supporting United Way part of doing business.

Heritage Bank will donate $25 to charity on behalf of all customers who open a new checking account between now and September 30th. Customers can choose from a list of charities including United Way of Pierce County. All funds donated to United Way throught this program will qualify for the match.

What can your organization do to make the most of the Community Challenge Match?

Community Impact: DECA Proposed as Tool for Child Impact Goal

While kindergarten teachers agree general knowledge, language and literacy are keys to learning, social and emotional development and health are most important for being ready to learn.

The Devereaux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) Program can help improve social and emotional development in children preparing for school. With this in mind, the partners working on Child & Youth Development hope to put DECA to work in Pierce County.
