| Maximizing the Match |
 |
|
Doubling your gift. It is hard to resist. This year's
Community Challenge Match is helping donors make
more of their gifts and many are taking advantage of
it.
Gifts from organizations such as the Bank of America
Foundation, Regence Community Health Fund and
the Weyerhaeuser Foundation are just a few of those
propelling the 2006 campaign toward it's goal.

| Bingham Society Steps Up to Support Kids |
 |
|
When the late Barbara Bingham was named as the
first chair of the Pierce County Commission on
Children, Youth and their Families, she brought home
her passion for this issue. Charley Bingham, then
Executive Vice President at Weyerhaeuser, was a
willing listener.
He is still listening.
This year, in support of the matching gift offered to
United Way by Craig & Niki Ueland, George & Dion
Russell, the Russell Investment Group and Bill &
Melinda Gates, Charley decided it was a perfect time
to honor Barbara’s determination to give kids in
Pierce County a break. Charley made an independent
offer—a $50,000 matching fund—all dedicated to
strengthening Early Learning resources in our
community.
A handful of wonderful friends liked the sound of that
idea. Their combined gifts equalled Charley’s fund a
month before the campaign was wrapped up. We
offer special thanks to the following individuals for
their generous decisions and support for Early
Learning.
- Joanne Bamford (Chair, Tocqueville Society )
- Rich Hanson (Weyerhaeuser Company)
- Steve & Sandy Hill (Washington State Health
Care Authority)
- Ken Madsen (Pierce County Assessor)
- Scott Marshall (Weyerhaeuser Company)
- Ed Rogel (Weyerhaeuser Company)
- Mike Rogers (R4 Printing & Past Tocqueville
Chair)
- Dick Taggart (Weyerhaeuser Company)
- Dr. George & Kimi Tanbara (Pediatrics Northwest)
- Mike & Mary Jo Tucci (Tucci & Sons)

| TPU Delivers Christmas to Family in Need |
 |
|
Christmas can be a difficult time for those who have
lost loved ones. For one family of six children, losing
their parents made this normally joyful time of year
very difficult.
The children moved in with a grandmother but
providing for them made it very hard to make ends
meet. Thankfully, United Way's Season of Caring
connected them with some of Santa's most generous
helpers. A team from Tacoma Public Utilities adopted
the family and not only provided gifts and dinner for
the holiday but brought them a tree, wreath and
decorations as well.
This family was just one of the many helped through
Season of Caring's connections. In total, more than
1,000 individuals were served and nearly $34,000 in
donated goods distributed. More than 60 local
companies and nearly 35 families and individuals
participated .

Impacting Our Community |
|
|
|
On February 13th, United Ways from across
Washington gathered in Olympia to make their voices
heard about issues affecting our state. The United
Way of Pierce County’s staff and champion
volunteers met with legislators to build relationships
and educate them about the importance of early
learning. To add to the excitement of the day,
Governor Christine Gregoire addressed the United
Ways of Washington that morning.
Pierce County residents identified early learning as a
top priority and this year the Governor’s budget
proposes an unprecedented investment in early
learning. Our collective voices can leverage support
for this critical issue and help to make our visions of
community impact a reality.
