Your Gift Keeps Our Streets Safe for Kids
The neighborhood surrounding Jennie Reed Elementary was in need of help. The residents knew they needed help to improve housing and develop the community, but they didn’t know where to begin.
In 2006, there were more than 8,000 emergency service calls in the Jennie Reed area. Trash and debris littered the area around the elementary school, exposing the children there to everything from live ammunition to used hypodermic needles.
United Way of Pierce County partnered with Safe Streets to create a safe route for the children attending Jennie Reed. In 2006, the effort mobilized nearly 100 volunteers for two days of cleanup.
Thanks to volunteers from throughout the county, 2,800 pounds of debris was cleared from the safe route, including a hand gun and a knife. The groups helped to clean up 170-cubic yards of litter from the neighborhood and removed gang graffiti throughout the area.
