Your Gift Prepares Children for Success
Sarah’s parents noticed she was not a typical preschooler. She had difficulty talking and understanding what others were saying to her. She was also very active and had trouble focusing her attention.
Research on early childhood development shows that children begin learning at birth. The earlier they receive developmental attention, the more likely they are to succeed in school and later in life. Undiagnosed learning disabilities can prevent a child from developing properly.
United Way of Pierce County’s Community Solutions Fund supports 13 programs focused on child development services. Good Samaritan Hospital’s Children’s Therapy Unit is just one of those.
Through CTU, Sarah’s parents were able to have their daughter evaluated. She was diagnosed with autism and received speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychological services to help her develop her skills. In addition, her parents learned the strategies they needed to support Sarah’s speech and social development.
In 2006, gifts through United Way of Pierce County helped more than 1,500 children improve their ability to meet developmental milestones.
