Your Gift Delivers Critical Medical Care

Type I diabetes can be fatal without the right medical attention. At 15, Mary was risking her life because she didn’t have health insurance.

One in eight people in Pierce County does not have health insurance. Seventy percent of children who are uninsured are eligible for coverage but their families don’t know how to get access.

In 2005, United Way of Pierce County partnered with the Client Outreach program to increase access to healthcare. In 2005, 571 people were enrolled in health insurance programs and more than $1 million in healthcare costs were recovered. Last year, 1,000 more individuals gained access to coverage and $1.2 million in medical expenses were reimbursed. Since its inception, Client Outreach has insured 3,782 people and recovered nearly $6.4 million in healthcare costs that would have otherwise been unpaid.

Mary’s family was one of those connected with a Client Outreach caseworker. Thanks to efforts like Client Outreach that improve how the system works, Mary’s family and thousands like them have the health insurance coverage they need.
