Your Gift Connects People to Critical Services
The fall wind storms caused problems for many in Pierce County in 2006. Like thousands, Tami and her five children were left without power for many days. The power outage resulted in a backed up septic system. Tami and her children were unable to stay in their home and were forced into a motel. Although she had home insurance, the septic damage was not covered. Tami didn’t know where to turn.
The wind storms in 2006 left 1.5 million people without power, some for more than a week. Insurance groups estimate the damage to insured properties alone at $500,000.
As part of a national United Way effort and a state-wide effort called Washington Information Network (WIN) 211, residents throughout Pierce County can now simply dial 211 to connect to the information and referral service. Much like dialing 411 or 911, United Way of Pierce County 211 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities.
For Tami, calling 211 helped her find the resources needed to help with the septic clean up and also helped her provide for her family. Tami is just one of nearly 34,000 people connected to help through 211.
