Your Gift Shelters Families
Gwen married her high school sweetheart and started a family when she was very young. Her husband always provided for their family while Gwen cared for the children. Then he left them. She found herself with six children to provide for and no work experience to earn a good job. She soon found herself without a home for her family.
In Pierce County, a single parent with two children would need to earn $21.38 per hour or $44,470 a year to earn what is considered a livable wage.
United Way of Pierce County’s Community Solutions Fund supports 126 programs throughout Pierce County, like the emergency shelter and transitional housing programs at Helping Hand House in Puyallup.
Thanks to the services she received at Helping Hand House, Gwen had a home for her family, learned to manage a budget and found a job that helped her provide for her family. Gwen is just one of the more than 250,000 people helped by United Way of Pierce County’s Community Solutions Fund.
