Your Gift Brightens Smiles
Suzy had never been to the dentist. Her family, financially strapped, had no dental insurance. At 17, Suzy attended her first dental appointment. A lifetime of neglect had resulted in severe decay and she was faced with losing many of her teeth. Her fear and medical limitations made treatment complicated.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease in America. It affects 80% of seventeen-year-olds. In Washington State, one in seven low-income children has unmet dental needs.
United Way of Pierce County has partnered with many in our community, like Lindquist Dental Clinic, to make sure more people have access to dental care. In 2005, United Way and many community partners launched the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) program. Since its launch, ABCD has served over 9,000 children and has added 50 dentists to their list of providers.
The staff at Lindquist worked with Suzy, helping her overcome her fear and get the treatment she needed. Suzy is just one of the 250,000 people who received the care needed thanks to programs funded by United Way of Pierce County’s Community Solutions Fund.
