Jessie was enrolled in Tacoma Daycare and Preschool a few months before his second birthday. He often displayed aggressive behavior towards the other children and when teachers tried to redirect his behavior, he would throw himself down and bang his head on the floor. In addition, they had problems communicating with Jessie.

Kindergarten teachers in Washington reported in 2005 that only 44% of incoming students were adequately prepared socially and emotionally to begin kindergarten. Research also shows that kids who are behind in their learning by the third grade are unlikely to ever catch up.

United Way contributes funding to 10 programs through the Community Solutions Fund. These programs provide early child development services to over 1,700 children in Pierce County. For Jessie, measuring each child 's developmental progress helped discover the problem early enough that he could be referred to specialized service.

Thanks to generous gifts through United Way, Jessie will have access to services that will enable him to begin school at the same level as his peers.

Giving through United Way of Pierce County is changing reality. This year, you can do more than ever before by giving to the Community Solutions Fund. Make the most of your gift. Give through United Way.
