Chris*, a 22-year-old patient, was diagnosed with cancer.  Although he earned a significant income, he had no health insurance.  Following a series of tests, doctors determined he needed to have surgery within the next month or he would die.

Many families in our community are unaware that healthcare can be affordable and accessible to them.  When people need care, and don 't know where to go, they often end up in our emergency rooms.  This is a very expensive choice for everyone, costing millions of dollars in uncompensated care each year.

To help eligible families obtain and use the benefits they are entitled to, United Way of Pierce County is partnering with coalitions throughout the county. The Client Outreach project of the Pierce County Healthcare Coalition helped 571 families find credible insurance coverage and captured over $1 million in medical bills issued by hospitals to be reimbursed through Medicaid.

The Client Outreach workers at Community Health Care helped Chris get the assistance he needed.  The team worked to gather the documentation of his condition, sited his need to be on unpaid medical leave for the surgery and recovery and helped him complete the applications for healthcare assistance. Thanks to these partners, Chris received the urgent surgery needed to save his life.

Giving through United Way of Pierce County is changing reality. This year, you can do more than ever before by giving to the Community Solutions Fund. Make the most of your gift. Give through United Way.
