Janet, age 76, is a widow who lives independently and is disabled in several ways, including deafness. She realized she needed help to replace a rotted porch on her home. The steps and railing were severely rotted, a safety hazard in general, but one that was of particular risk to Janet.
The average monthly cost for an assisted living facility in our county is about $2,200. The growing number of elderly unable to afford this expense is staggering.
Seniors and people with disabilities achieved greater independence and decreased isolation by participating in several programs funded through United Way of Pierce County’s Community Solutions Fund.
Thanks to these programs, Janet was able to call on volunteers from Lutheran Community Services’ Care Team for assistance in planning and managing the replacement of her porch. The volunteers assessed the situation and helped complete the project, insuring her safety and independence.
Giving through United Way of Pierce County is changing reality. This year, you can do more than ever before by giving to the Community Solutions Fund. Make the most of your gift. Give through United Way.
