For Scholarship Winner, Volunteering Reaps Big Rewards

Randy Brennan loved Mrs. Forsberg's class. And who can blame him. He got to make cookies and have story time. He was greeted with hugs and hellos and couldn't get out the door without hugs goodbye. But the 2003 graduate didn't find his favorite class on the Bellarmine Prep campus. Instead, his favorite class was held at Delong Elementary School where he served as a mentor in Mrs. Forsberg's first grade class.

Randy spent two semesters and 120 hours working with the Delong first graders on a variety of projects. He finished out his senior year teaching them computers and even helped them write and illustrate their own storybooks using the computer.

Randy also spent time volunteering with the Pierce County Juvenile Court Diversion program, Bellarmine Campus Ministry and Natural Helpers - a program where he was elected to help other students in need of counsel or academic assistance. With a total of more than 400 hours of community service under his belt, Randy was an ideal choice for the 2003 Jerry Beckendorf Community Service scholarship.

While with the Pierce County Juvenile Court Diversion program, Randy served on the Community Accountability Board (CABs), working with first time offenders and their parents. Part of his responsibilities was to hold the youth offenders accountable for their actions. Randy not only accomplished this with respect and maturity but also became a role model for the youth he worked with.

He also worked with the homeless, organized student retreats and worked with the freshman orientation program at Bellarmine. All while maintaining a 3.93 grade point average.

"I have great respect for Randy," said Mat Reitzug, supervisor of CABs at the Pierce County Juvenile Court Diversion unit. "He is a young man that provides much hope for our society's future."

Randy is attending Gonzaga University in Spokane. His parents are Mary Ann, member of the Teamsters Local No. 117 and Bill Brennan, member of Teamsters Local No. 313.

*Randy was named to the President's List at Gonzaga University in Februrary of 2005. His sister Kelsey recieved a Jerry Beckendorf Community Service Scholarship in 2005. Kelsey will also attend Gonzaga University.
