Labor Unions Donate Skills to Help Local Daycare

Members of the Ironworkers Local 86 have participated in Day of Caring for several years. But this year was different. After a site visit to this year's project location, Ironworkers coordinator Lee Newgent realized, it was going to take more than a Day of Caring.

As Lee toured the Metropolitan Development Council preschool and child care facility, he saw more projects his team could do. Before he left, he had committed to not only doing those projects but providing much of the materials as well.

As participants of the Day of Caring, the team replaced and repaired drawers and cabinets, assembled a large toy, built a divider wall and a shed. They have returned a number of times to complete other projects since that day.

The desire to help this organization has spread to other unions as well. Members of the electrical workers IBEW Local 76 have contributed their expertise to help install a new stove and hood and repair electrical and circut problems in the kitchen.

The unions expect to continue working at the day care into 2006.
