Since 1946, the United Way and the AFL-CIO have enjoyed a cooperative partnership. Together, we help improve the lives of working people in our community and help connect local employers and employees to human services in our community.

In Pierce County, Labor Community Services coordinates the involvement of organized labor in the Campaign, helps families and individuals find appropriate services, and provides training for working people to help their union brothers and sisters.

The Community Campaign

We bring the philanthropic interests of local working people into United Way's annual campaign. The Labor Campaign Cabinet works with labor organizations and companies with organized workforces. They help to increase worker involvement in the campaign by bringing a union perspective to the Campaign Cabinet.

Helping People in Need

Our Labor Community Services staff connects workers in need to union volunteers who can help. We also assist in cases of plant closures, layoffs, and strikes, helping workers access the services they need to support themselves and their families. We also work with the National Association of Letter Carriers, the United States Postal Service, the Pierce County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and the Combined Federal Campaign staff, on the National Letter Carriers Food Drive in May of each year.

Labor Community Services also offers a scholarship for the children of union members. Applications for the Jerry Beckendorf Community Service Scholarship are accepted in March.
