The Willie Stewart Community
Service Scholarship program celebrates and recognizes Pierce
County high school seniors who have given back to their community
through volunteer service. Scholarships awards range from $750 to $2000 and will
be sent directly to recipients' college of attendance upon verification of enrollment.
Scholarship applications must be received by April 1, 2008 to be considered.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school senior in Pierce County
- Completed a minimum of 50 hours of community or volunteer service in the past year (April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008)
- Write a 250-500 word essay
- Have applied or will apply to an institution of higher learning (technical college, community college, trade school, or university) for the 2008-2009 academic year
Guidelines for Applying:
- Complete and mail the application by April 1, 2008
- Mail in one completed letter of recommendation postmarked no later than April 1, 2008
Judging Criteria:
A scholarship review committee will be judging all complete applications and will award scholarship amounts based on scores in the following categories:
- Amount of service
- Your community service demonstrates significant thought and action in addressing the needs of the community. 50 hours during the last year is the minimum requirement, but we encourage you to include volunteer information from previous years as well. Special consideration is given to those students who have accumulated more than the minimum of 50 hours.
- Leadership
- Include information that demonstrates how you have been a leader by words or example.
- Impact of service
- Demonstrate that your community service involves an area of need and community focus that is important to Pierce County and/or your neighborhood.
- Commitment to service
- Based on your essay, does it appear that you have an understanding of community need?
