youth Engaged in Service (YES)
Youth Engaged in Service (Y.E.S.) is an innovative civic engagement program that provides students with the skills and confidence necessary to become active citizens able to make a difference in their school and community.
Y.E.S. is designed to encourage greater civic engagement and to cultivate a culture of service among youth. It targets 8 th and 9 th graders in order to give these students the tools and knowledge to make a positive impact during their high school years.
Students are nominated by school administrators and teachers to participate in YES sessions during the summer. Each Y.E.S. session is designed to serve approximately 100 students. The session is divided into four one-day segments. The day begins with the same core components addressing civic knowledge and civic engagement, while the second half of the day is devoted to exploring a particular issue area (i.e., teen health, environment, hunger/homelessness, diversity, etc.). We partner with community nonprofit agencies addressing these issue areas to provide the participants with first-hand knowledge and experience. Y.E.S. also invites members of local government in to discuss how students can become more engaged in making measurable differences in their neighborhoods and community at-large.
Through these trainings, the students have the opportunity to create their very own community service projects and later complete the projects as a group.
