The Art of Asking

So you wonder how you can possibly share the United Way message through meetings with all employees? Here are some simple steps to help you make quality contact with all employees. Don’t forget this is not a “personal” ask. This is an opportunity to educate your fellow employees about United Way of Pierce County and our community.

Step 1: Make Your Own Gift First
• Consider being a leadership giver or increasing your campaign contribution.
• Your contribution says: I believe in United Way and our community.
• It is easier for others to make their commitment when they know you are a supporter.

Step 2: Introduction
• Do the easiest contacts first. For example, contact those collegues who have given before or who you believe would support United Way. Build self-confidence.
• Familiarize yourself with the campaign information.
• Explain your role as a coordinator when you personally contact coworkers about the campaign.

Step 3: Talk About United Way and Critical Needs Facing Our Community
• United Way provides the best way to help the most people.
• United Way focuses resources on critical community needs: Housing Availability, Child and Youth Development, Access to Healthcare and a safety net of services through the Community Solutions Fund.

Step 4: Give Examples of How Your Gift Will Help Makes a Difference
• Try to personalize the ask with stories and examples of people you know who have been helped.
• Use examples available on United Way of Pierce County’s website or use the United Way video as a resource.

Step 5: Explain the Pledge Form

Step 6: Answer Questions
• Respond positively. Every comment is a chance to educate others about United Way and our community.
• Unanswerable questions? Call your Account Executive/Loaned Executive. He or she will respond quickly with the information you need.

Step 7: Ask for the Gift
• Encourage each person to give through payroll deduction. Small monthly gifts grow to a large annual contribution.
• If an employee cannot complete the form right away, have a clear deadline for turning in the form.

Step 8: Say Thank you!
