BASIC NEEDS

Children can't learn and families can't thrive if they are worried about where their next meal is coming from or how they'll pay the rent. That is why our work to break the cycle of poverty includes investments in essential services to meet basic needs. We recognize that a person in crisis typically has more than one need. By focusing on breaking down barriers to self-sufficiency along with providing essential services, we ensure families receive comprehensive, consistent support to move them from crisis to stability.

United Way continues to make investments in our community with a focus on achieving specific results designed to help move individuals and families toward self-sufficiency. In addition community investments, we are also leading the following efforts:

SOUTH SOUND 211

United Way of Pierce County is the home of South Sound 211, a free call center connecting people to vital resources. South Sound 211 not only refers people to help but also enrolls callers in the Basic Food program, connects them to transportation and helps callers navigate the mental health system. READ MORE

HUNGER INITIATIVE

Food insecurity is a huge problem in our area, and we know that we can’t face it alone. We have partnered with a diverse group of community organizations - including Emergency Food Network (EFN), FISH Food Banks, WSU Extension, Pierce Conservation District, Peninsula Community Foundation, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, St. Leo’s Food Connection, local farmer’s markets and others - to tackle issues such as access to fresh, nutritious food, sustainability of our food system, and child and senior nutrition.
