LAUNCH INTO LITERACY

Launch into Literacy graphicSTOP SUMMER LEARNING LOSS

Every summer, low-income children lose two to three months of learning. Launch into Literacy supplies books to children at home and pairs volunteers with tutoring and mentoring opportunities. Having books at home improves reading scores and increases the likelihood a child will graduate from high school.

LOW INCOME STUDENTS FALL BEHIND

WHY IT MATTERS

Low-income students lose an average of more than two months in reading achievement in the summer, while their middle-income peers tend to make gains in reading.1

By age 4, low-income children hear 30 million fewer words than children from high-income families.2

One in four Pierce County third graders is not reading at grade level.3

Those who don’t read at grade level by age 10 are six times more likely to drop out of high school.4

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • Children with books at home attain higher levels of education.5
  • Giving children books leads them to read more often and for greater amounts of time.6
  • Having books at home improves children’s reading performance.7
  • When children have greater access to books research indicates improved attitudes toward reading and learning.7
