United Way of Pierce County is working to help our children and their families overcome the challenges created by poverty so they can succeed, creating a thriving community. When our community thrives, we all win. Poverty is a complex issue that requires a united effort. We can’t tackle it alone! In Pierce County, 12% of our families live in poverty. Another 22% struggle to provide their family with basic needs. It is our goal to increase the percentage of families with children who are financially stable.
Approximately 2 in 5 children in our community enter kindergarten without the skills to succeed. It is our goal that more kids will start kindergarten strong.
In Pierce County, 1 in 4 third graders is not reading at grade level. By age 10, kids who aren’t at grade level are more likely to drop out of school. It is our goal that more kids will read at grade level by third grade, putting them on a path for success.
The first step toward breaking the cycle of poverty is knowing where to turn for help. South Sound 2-1-1 can help callers find the right resources and get connected to programs that can get them on their feet.
